What is Chelation Therapy and how does it work?
The therapy has been used to treat the symptoms of heart disease, stroke, and poor circulation by removing plaque from inside the arteries. The treatment is accomplished with the series of intravenous treatment sessions administered by a trained physician in this type of therapy. Vitamins and minerals may also be introduced as part of the therapy.
Due to the commonality of cardiovascular disease, most people are aware that plaque accumulation clogs the inside of the arteries. This causes blockages and eventually leads to hardening of the arteries. As a result, there is poor circulation through the arteries and is commonly referred to as atherosclerosis.
Plaque buildup inside the arteries consists of cholesterol, fats and calcium. Calcium is the component that holds plaque together. Chelation includes an ingredient called EDTA which slowly pulls the calcium out of the plaque and gradually dissolves it into the bloodstream. This helps to clean out the arteries over a period of time while the patient is under therapy.
Many argue that Chelation treatments are about 85% successful and perhaps are a good substitute for bypass surgery. Our clinic remains neutral on this subject. We don’t want to encourage anyone to take on non-conventional medical treatments without understanding the risks and facts that are involved. However we are highly trained in providing chelation therapy and have performed this treatment on many patients desperately seeking alternative care.
Chelation therapy is also used for the treatment of lead poisoning. It bonds with the lead, eventually pulling it out of the bloodstream.
Best long-term results are achieved by doing 20 to 40 biweekly treatments. However, many patients choose to have 5 to 10 treatments with good results.
For a full series of long-term treatments, patients should budget $2500-$4000. However each individual session will cost the patient only $120.
Depending on the condition of the patient, additional therapies may also be performed to help improve quality of life. In some cases, that means doing a complete blood panel and investigating hormone imbalances. In the modern age, Males and Females alike over 40 years of age will likely be experiencing some form of hormone deficiency.
Just like heart disease and heavy metal poisoning, hormone deficiencies are more and more common in the modern age. This is likely due to the quantity of processed foods and the accumulation of toxic chemicals (from industry and pesticides) ingested over a number of years. For more information on this, please Google “The Dirty Dozen List of Endocrine Disruptors” and see for yourself.
If one is truly interested in seeking optimal health, it is strongly recommended to perform a chelation therapy coupled with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. The patient will generally see improvement in the following:
- Loss of body fat
- Improved muscle tone (mass)
- Improved sense of well being
- More energy
- Improved libido (sex drive)
