Peanuts have long been a misunderstood food. It is technically a legume and not a nut. Scientists from Vanderbilt University put this delicious bean to the test to see if it had any cardiovascular benefits.
For the effects of this study the researchers paired the peanut to tree nuts like almonds cashews pecans and macadamia. They compiled data from over 200,000 subjects and what they found was that there was a reduction in 17-21% in total mortality and 23-38% reduction in cardiovascular mortality amongst individuals with high peanut intake. They wrote ¨ Consumption of nuts, particularly peanuts given their general affordability, may be considered a cost-effective measure to improve cardiovascular health.
